Things seem to work this way already.
I've reread this thread multiple times just to make sure I'm not misinterpreting what the problem is and I think this is actually still broken. In both Firefox and IE7 if you have not created a signature at all and do a reply, the cursor is in front of the quoted text on the same line (no line break). That is if you begin typing immediately you'd get:

Not sure if it's worth fretting over at this point but from what I can tell the issue reported is still occuring.
OK i just realized that the title of the bug is wrong and may lead to the confusion (at the time I wrote for some reason I misunderstood the bug). But after rereading the thread my first comment is correct it is wrong in light of the actual bug.

to:
[Feature Request] On reply the text cursor is placed in front of quoted text on the same line without a line break.
Thanks for fixing the auto-focus feature on reply in 4.2.2. But, a couple of line breaks (as suggested here) would make it more elegant and save some keystrokes.
